Comox Fire Rescue

Prevention, Emergency Response, and the Comox Fire Training Centre

Comox Fire Rescue provides a variety of preventive and emergency services to a population of over 18,000 in an area of 16 square miles. This includes the Town of Comox, the Comox Fire Protection Improvement District, the Bates Huband Local Service Area (Regional District of Comox-Strathcona), and the Comox Indian Band. They also operate the Comox Fire Training Centre, which trains firefighters from all over Vancouver Island, and even parts of BC and the rest of Canada. The training centre is certified by the JIBC.

Meet our Members: Brett Clarke

This week on Meet our Members, we interview Brett Clarke!

CFR: Could you provide a brief background of your fire service career?

2 years in with Willis Point Volunteer FD (Victoria), Comox since Aug-2015

CFR: Was there any specific event that first interested you in becoming a fire fighter?

Living in a number of smaller communities around the Island made me realize how important the fire service was which prompted my interest in becoming a fire fighter.

CFR: What is your favourite part of volunteering for Comox Fire Rescue (or working in the valley in general)?

Being a member of a highly professional team that delivers a valuable service at a high level. For me it generates the same enthusiasm that I used to experience playing competitive team sports.

CFR: Outside of the fire department what are your interests/hobbies?

Outdoors - hiking, camping, off-road travel. The Ocean - boating, fishing

CFR: What are some major changes you have seen in the fire service industry during your career?

Having had a short career thus far my lense is somewhat restricted but a trend I see continuing is the improvement of inter-operability among fire service departments and emergency services: regional cooperation, communication improvements, expanding the scope of operational considerations.

CFR: If you could change one thing about the fire service, what would it be?

More/better training for all fire service members. I am privileged to be with CFR where there exists a strong training culture and facility. I would be a proponent of improving access to this level of training for committed fire service members everywhere.

Welcome to the team, Brett, and thanks for your commitment!
